In Memory of...

"The Pink Thing".

This strange pink blob is acutally one of those toys you win out of the claw machines. Jason won it for me while I was pregnant with Zach. Yes, it's pink but we didn't know what we were having at the time and it was the most win-able. Since then Zach found that he could make this neat popping noise by pulling on the strings of his pink toy. This was probably one of his most favorite toys and saved our sanity on more than one occasion. Unfortunatley, the pink thing was left at Shaila's wedding reception and, sadly, never seen again. We have since found a similar toy in green. (much more masculine) It's much smaller and doesn't quite have the same popping power but it's still entertaining to watch. I found this video the other day of our beloved pink thing and just had to share.

This is a video from a while back of Zach with his drum. We found it at a garage sale for $1 a while back. At frist he would just turn it over and over, smacking it and trying to figure out how it all worked. This is one of the first times he seemed to realize that if he smacked the top part it made fun noises. He got pretty excited about it at one point. He's a born musician!!! (Hear that uncle Creed- he's just following in your footsteps).

My First Quilt

I just had to share my latest project. I don't really have much sewing experience and really have no idea what I'm doing but this funny thing happens whenever I step into the fabric/craft store. Instantly, my mind is running a million miles a minute and I end up spending hours gazing at different fabrics or patterns, dreaming of what I could do with them.

I recently came accross this idea on make-and-takes to have an "I spy quilt". Basically, there are two of each pattern and the child can play I spy as they search for the matching pieces. Considering my little boy is only 8 months old and I've never actually made a quilt before, I opted for the super-simplified version with larger sqares and made it a "mini". I had been thinking of doing something like this when some friends of mine said they were going to make tummy time quilts with different textures for the babies to feel. I loved the idea and decided to combine them to create a textile-mini-I-spy-quilt. I have silky, bumpy, rough, terry cloth, soft, smooth, and fuzzy.

Ode' to Idaho

I found this while blog-surfing. I've heard it before but I was excited to have the little reminder of home. Here's the blog I copied it from.

For those of you who've lived in Idaho, or know someone who does...
FORGET REDNECKS;THIS IS WHAT JEFF FOXWORTHY HAD TO SAY ABOUT IDAHOANS !

  • If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in Idaho .
  • If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you live in Idaho .
  • If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed the wrong number, you live in Idaho .
  • If 'vacation' means going anywhere south of Salt Lake City for the weekend, you live in Idaho .If you measure distance in hours, you live in Idaho .
  • If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live in Idaho .
  • If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' and back again in the sameday, you live in Idaho .
  • If you install security lights on your house and garage but leave bothunlocked, you live in Idaho .
  • If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in Idaho .
  • If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you live in Idaho .
  • If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph --you're going 80, and everyone is still passing you, you live in Idaho .
  • If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow, you live in Idaho .
  • If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you live in Idaho .
  • If you find 10 degrees 'a little chilly' you live in Idaho .

Zach's TEETH!!

See my little nubbies of teeth? Pretty cool huh? mom and dad are sure glad they finally came in so I can quit being so cranky..

ZACH'S NEW TRICK

PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR AUDIO BEFORE PLAYING!!!! I can't stress this enough. I was excited and shifted to my uber-embarrassing insanesly high pitched baby speak voice. I couldn't help it! We tried to use our vast technological knowledge to extract the audio from the file... alas, we have yet to discover the correct method. SO- Please mute! For my sake.

I know I suffer from a bit of the "mother's eye" syndrome when I say... My child is a genious!!! But he is! Just look at him. He can wave! Maybe it is common among babies his age, but let me pretend ok? I noticed a couple of days ago while feeding him lunch that he was preoccupied with twisting his wrist around while he cranked his neck sideways to gaze at our fish. It almost resembled a wave but I thought... no, it's just my imagination, it must be a fluke. Since then, however, I noticed him making the same motion when we stood in front of a mirror or when he saw someone he recognized. Finally, yesterday we were able to document it on video.

Another Sweet Givaway

OK- So I'm a sucker for givaways and Vanilla Joy is having ANOTHER very cool prize. It's called The MiniBox from http://theoriginalscrapbox.com/catalog/. NOW- if you have ever seen my organizing skills you know how much I need something like this. My scrapbooking paraphanalia is scattered through multiple areas of my home and It's quite the production to gather the required tools to complete a single page for my scrapbook- THUS, it hasn't been updated since the little one came along. I love how this box can be stored under a small table to serve as a work area. Check it out at http://www.vanillajoy.com/.

The Teething Has Begun!!!

Zach didn't sleep well last night. He woke up over and over again. He seemed to have a stuffy nose and didn't want to eat. Mom thought he had a cold or something. When mom tried to feed him he would just blow rasberries into his spoon instead. This resulted in a spattering of turkey and sweet potatoes all over mom. Finally, after his dinner ended up all over him AND mom, he got a bath. After Mom took him out he started chomping on her finger. Surprise! What had once been soft smooth gums had it little rough spot. Just a tiny tip of a tooth poking through. How did we not realize it before. No cold! It's a tooth!!!
OK, so mom may or may not have shed a tear or two for her baby who's growing up way too fast!
On a side note.... look at what happens when mom leaves Zach alone with Dad:

Do you remember??

So, it was 7 years ago and I think most of us can still say absolutely that they remember where they were and what they were doing when the towers were hit.

I know I do.

I was the first one up in the morning in my apartment. I liked to get my shower in before my roomates used up all the hot water. I liked to sing in the shower so I bought myself a shower radio. That morning there was something different though. No music. I flipped it to my favorite channel and found talking instead. "Oh well" I thought and hopped in. It didn't take long before I realized what they were talking about. Something about New York? A bomb? My thoughts went immediately to Oklahoma City. Then they clarified. It was a plane! A passenger plane? So many people. I hurried out of the shower and to my room where I flipped on my tiny television set. I was still convinced that it was a misunderstanding, it couldn't have actually happened. Moments later I was storming through the apartment trying to wake up my roomates. They didn't believe me. Not till they all found themselves huddled around the same television, watching the smoke billow out of the tower. I was still staring at it in shock when the live footage showed a 2nd plane come into the shot and disappear into the 2nd building. I think my heart stopped. I had thought the first one was an accident, a terrible accident. But a 2nd? All of a sudden it was an entirely different situation.

I still had to go to class but most of the classes were spent glued to the TV screens of the various rooms. During a break between classes I paused as I walked by the lounge near the cafeteria. There were probably 30 or more students gathered around a big screen, they were all silent. All seeming to be hypnotized by the smoke and flames. Occasionally something would fall from the area near the blaze. I tried not to think about what, or who, that might be. I tried not to think what might be going through the peoples minds who were trapped. I still kept trying to convince myself that it wasn't really happening. Then, a tower fell. It just fell. It seemed like it was in slow motion. There were two, then one. I got weak in the knees. Shock. I was sick. I had watched it happen. The rest of the day blurred. The other tower fell at some point, but I was still so in shock I harldly registered. I remember being surprised at how smooth they were. How they seemed to just shrink into the ground. The New York skyline would never be the same. People's lives would never be the same.

We lived near a nuclear plant so things in town pretty much shut down. People were afraid that if we were under attack, they might go after a nuclear plant next. Students who were part of the military seemed to just disapear as they raced to be of some aid. Walmart ran out of water jugs. The grocery store ran out of flour as people prepared for the worst. I felt like I glided through the day. Like, I don't remember actually walking to my classes. I felt like someone else was moving me. Like some sort of out of body experience. And I just kept thinking.... the people. Poor people, how frightened had they been. How brave of those who tried to help.

My husband had a different experience. When he found nothing but voices on the radio he turned it off. He spent most of the day in the library and didn't ever pass the TV lounge so he didn't see that large group students standing like zomies as they watched. He didn't know what had happened until after 5:00 that evening. He had no idea. He had gone about his day as though everything was just fine. He still had to take a moment to gather himself when he finally did hear the news.
It's interesting to think that people eveywere were doing the same thing. Maybe we weren't all doing it at the same time, but I'm sure most anyone who heard stopped what they were doing and took a moment. A real moment to do.... whatever it is they needed to do. Pray, think, cry...

Thank you to those who have served. Thank you to those who sacrified. My prayers go to those who have lost. God Bless America!!!

Insomnia

Would you believe that it is 5:00 in the morning and I'm awake, blogging? Well, it's true and to make it worse I've actually been awake since 3:30 when the little one woke for his usual snack. I know, he's 8 months old. He should be sleeping through the night. I just don't have the patience or the ability to let him cry and to be honest it usually isn't too bad. I wake up. Feed him for no more than 10 minutes and then I'm back to sleep. It usually doesn't really affect me so I just keep at it. This morning was different for some reason. Things swirling through my mind. Things I need to make sure to do today. People I'm supposed to remember to call. Stuff I wish I could do but probably won't have time. So, I got up and here I am. Oh! And here's my little man... I think I shed a tear when I saw him in his little suit. So grown up!!!

Thank you Grandma Gundersen for the very shnazzy diggs. And Yes, he appears to be standing unassisted! Mostly he's propped against the stairs there but there may or may not have been a bit of a tumble at the end of our photoshoot. We recovered alright though. I'm sure that is just the first of many.

So, a request for advice from the mothers out there. What do you do when your child decides to boycott his bottle?? I'm still working so I worry about him not getting the nutrition that he needs while I'm away. We have bought every type of bottle we can find to try with no luck. Thankfully, he has an awsomely patient babysitter who basically spoonfeeds him his milk. Still, we can't keep that up forever. What happens when it's time to wean him from breastfeeding? What if he gets dehydrated? Loses weight? Gets sick because he doesn't have enough vitamins?

I know as a mom I'm prone to being a worry wart but is this normal?

THE BIKE TRAILER!!!

So I was bragging about this trailer in my earlier post but you really need to see this.

How cool is that!!! Zach was definately intrigued as you can see. He's looking very thoughtful in his new travel trailer. We have set the goal to take regular family bike rides as often as the weather allows us. Unfortunatley, it seems that I've completely forgotten how to ride my bike! I'm just not as limber or coordinated as I used to be. My goodness am I out of shape. Hopefully our family trips will help me get back to a bit more of my old shape. Who'm I kidding! It's going to take a heck of a lot more than that! I'd better get going... (or maybe I'll have another brownie-yummmm)

The Secret is in the Sauce- Sitstas

What a neat idea. I don't know about everyone else in blog world, but I get great joy from little things and comments just happen to be one of them. I guess they just make me feel important. Like maybe I am making an impact somewhere. OK, so I may not have made any huge important statements or shared a some deep profound thoughts but I can dream. Mostly, I just love bragging about the cuteness of my little one but, somewhere, someone must have felt the same because they started this blog. Check it out to find out more... they also may or may not have won me over with thier latest contest. The CRICUIT strikes again!!! Someday, somehow I will gain possesion of this fantastic scrapbookers dream tool. Check this out:

Sunny Saturday!

So, I've been studying up on photography recently and while my experimenting has resulted in a lot of under/overexposed photos, smeared photos and some strange mixture inbetween. Still, I'm getting closer. One thing I've really wondered about was how to deal with light. It's the sun in eyes or dark face dilema. I was letting Zach play my muse today as he focused on the twigs and nearly dead grass in our front yard. I love this first photo because you can really see him concetrating. He's slowly running his fingers over the stick to feel each little bump and groove. Then there was this picture...
The sun was just sinking low in the sky and I loved how it was glistening on the grass, but we lost a lot of the glisten when I had him facing into the sun. But if he was facing away he had this great shine in his hair but his face was too dark. So... I forced the flash. There was plenty of light so the camera didn't want to flash but it brightened up his face while still keeping the glisten on his hair and the grass behind him. I know, I'm such an amateur and those of you who know photography are just rolling your eyes right now but I'm actually kinda excited. Just one step further to the pro that I hope to be one day. WaHoo!

SO! About our sunny day. We were on a mission this morning. We have decided to commit to a healthier lifestyle and part of that was finding new ways to get active as a family. So, we decided to buy a bike trailer. One of those kid trailer you hook to the back of your bicycle. We found one at walmart for like $150 but I was determined to get a better deal than that. So I turned to the Craig's List! I love craig's list. I found a bunch of duds and then I came across just what I was looking for. It was a double trailer that converts to a stroller. A Burley. It had a bug screen and extra space for groceries. It was perfect. BUT- it was at a garage sale across town and I would have to beat anyone else who was looking for a trailer. So, I got there bright and early at 9 AM. It was perfect. BUT... it was a bit old and dirty and had a tear in the back. I talked to one of the ladies running the sale and told her I was interested then stepped aside to call Jason and get his ok. During that time a woman saw me checking it out and ran over to the other woman there and bought it... right out from under me!!! I was sooooooo sad!

As I was talking to the gal running the sale again she said, "I think one of my nieghbors is planning on selling one similar down the street." So I went down the street but she wasn't home. Bummer! I left my number and said I wanted it- I was taking a gamble though. I didn't even know what brand it was. She called me around noon and I headed over. To my delight I found a newer, cleaner, brighter, lighter, all around BETTER trailer. It even flattens for storage. I just have to say... I am sooooo excited!!!! I also managed to walk away with a swing for our tree, 2 books, a remote control car, a shape teaching toy and a stuffed grover ALL for much less than we would have paid for just the trailer if we had gone to Walmart. Garage Sales ROCK!!!

Zach and I both came home and were totally pooped. What a day! I think we are both going to sleep great tonight.

At the Beach!

Labor Day was a beautiful sunny day so we headed off to the Lake Michigan beach with some friends from Church. Zach had never seen a lake before so we just had to head over and check it out.
He was fascinated! The wind was blowing just enough to make his hair go flying. We had a tough time getting him to look at the camera because he was so enthralled with the waves lapping over his little feet and the sand squishing between his toes.

The Harley's Are Here!

Miller Park's parking lot is usually full of cars as people gather to see the brewers "Play Baaaallll!!" We had the opportunity to witness a completely different sort of crowd. This year, Harley Davidson celebrated it's 105th anniversary with 105 rides from around the country. I learned that a "ride" is a large group of riders who travel in a group. When I say large- I mean HUGE! Some of these groups numbered in the thousands and people were lined up along the overpasses to wave as they passed by.

On the 28th we decided to take a family trip to see the motorcyles. We were shocked to find the entire Miller Parking lot jam packed with bikes. They were all kinds of colors and styles and I have to say I got pretty dizzy looking over the masses. Zach was fascinated . There were lots of loud noises but he didn't seem scared at all.

I didn't realize but many police officers actually drive Harleys. This one was posted just outside the entrance to the park. I guessing it belonged to one of the officers helping to direct the thousands of riders into the lot.
